The AFRL shield was designed to show the historical origins of the unified laboratory, to encompass the broad spectrum of missions, and to point towards the future.<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

The blue background is symbolic of the United States Air Force (USAF). The\u00a0<\/span>primary mission of the AFRL is to support the warfighting needs of the USAF,\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>and this background reminds us that we are part of the AF Crew<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Finally, the shield is simple. The uncluttered nature allows both AFRL\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>members and outside associates to easily recognize and remember the shield.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>Its simplicity also reminds us that all technologies, capabilities, and systems\u2014<\/strong><\/span>no matter how powerful or complex\u2014started from fundamental research in a\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>laboratory<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The upper, half-hexagon-shaped portion of the patch also represents a cross sectional <\/strong><\/span>view of <\/strong><\/span>the S0 truss segment, also called the Center Integrated Truss Assembly Starboard 0 Truss, attached to the top of the ISS Destiny Laboratory Module in April 2002 during Expedition 4. This truss formed the center backbone of the Space Station<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

NASA’s “Flight Operations” emblem (updated in 2014) symbolizes and commemorates the Flight Operations team’s unique contribution to human space flight since the Mercury program. <\/span>It replaced the earlier “Mission Operations” logo,\u00a0reflecting the merger of NASA\u2019s \u201cFlight Crew\u201d and \u201cMission Operations\u201d\u00a0divisions.<\/span><\/p>\n

On the upper border is the wording “Res Gesta Per Excellentiam” \u2014 “Achieve\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>through Excellence.”\u00a0 Similar to one of the Air Force\u2019s Core Values, Excellence In\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>All We Do, it represents an individual and team commitment to \u201ca\u00a0 belief,\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>craftsmanship, and perseverance, qualities required to continue the exploration of\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>space and the quest for the stars\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n
