Special Weapons Command Established, Kirtland AFB

The Special Weapons Command was created on the west side of Kirtland AFB where AFRL's current facilities are located. The Command directed and coordinated research and development for all organizations dealing with atomic and other unconventional weapons. Because much of the work involved research and development, the command was eventually absorbed by the Air Research and Development Command.
